About Duty Kit Picker

We don’t do "tacticool." We do what works.

Duty Kit Picker started as a solo project with a simple goal: help first responders, rookies, and academy grads stop wasting money on gear that looks great online and fails in real life.

If you spend any time on first responder forums or Reddit, you see the exact same questions asked every single day: "I start the academy next week, what boots should I buy?" or "What goes on my duty belt?" The problem is the internet is flooded with "influencer bait"-gear pushed by paid advertisers that has a thousand five-star reviews from airsoft players, but completely falls apart the second a real cop or medic puts it to use on a 16-hour shift.

Duty Kit Picker was built to cut through that noise.

Our Roots

I grew up in this culture. My father started his career walking the tiers of a maximum-security state prison in the 1980s and eventually retired as a state parole agent. Following in his footsteps, I earned a degree in Criminal Justice and officially entered the state corrections system over a decade ago.

My personal wake-up call was a cheap pair of academy boots that couldn’t survive one wet shift on the yard. Miserable day, soaked feet, lesson learned.

That is when I adopted my core philosophy: Buy once, cry once. Paying a little more for functional, purpose-built gear that holds up over time is almost always cheaper than replacing garbage over and over.

How We Vet the Gear

My background is strictly law enforcement and corrections, but a fully functional response ecosystem relies on Fire, EMS, Dispatch, and the Military. To make sure the gear recommended for those professions is just as bulletproof, I lean on a trusted network of real-world operators:

But I don’t just take their word for it. Every piece of equipment on this site is cross-referenced against hours of research scouring specialized subreddits and professional forums. If a product doesn't have a solid, real-world consensus backing it up, or if it feels like paid advertising, it doesn’t make the list.

This site is meant to be a living resource: a curated collection of boots, lights, belts, and everyday carry gear that working professionals actually rely on.

Stay safe out there.
